Where are we in South Africa?
In Nemato! This is a township located in Port Alfred, a small town at the east coast of South Africa.

The ‘Ndlambe Municipality’ is responsible for this township, a local government authority located in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. It encompasses several towns and areas, including Port Alfred and the Nemato Township. The Ndlambe Municipality is responsible for providing essential services and governance to its residents in its region.
Like many townships in South Africa, Nemato originates in the country's apartheid-era policies, which enforced racial segregation and led to the forced removal of non-white populations from more central areas to designated township areas. These townships were often located on the outskirts of cities and towns.
Nemato is home to a diverse population, including people from various ethnic backgrounds, such as Xhosa, Afrikaans, and others. The population includes a mix of working-class individuals and families (Ndlambe Municipality 2023).
As typical in many townships, issues like economic challenges, unemployment, and poverty have persisted in Nemato. Access to essential services like healthcare, education, and housing has historically been limited for many residents.
Housing in Nemato varies from informal settlements and tiny, modest houses to more recently developed housing projects. Over the years, there have been efforts to improve housing conditions in the township (personal communication with Zuko Mandele, 2023).
Nemato has different educational facilities, but access to quality education is still challenging for many residents (personal communication with Veliswa). Organizations like the NHL Stenden University and individuals have worked to improve educational opportunities in the township.
